Welcome! In this thread, we will be discussing various ways to compose an art piece. Ohh, wait, I mean tags.

So, what is Composition anyway? Composition is the placement of visual elements in an art piece. It's where you put your render/focal point and effects, and it GREATLY affects the tag. You need to control the viewers attention so that they look throughout your piece, without skipping over important details. The goal of composition is to hold your viewers attention as long as possible so they can't help but look at your work. The arrangement of the elements affects the "read" of the tag. This "read" is how the eye travels through the image. In the final section, I'll cover a few types of "reads"

Here is a wonderful link about composition that explains a lot of what we will be talking about.

Now that we've got that covered, lets dive in.

The Rule of Thirds

To start things off, let's discuss one very basic compositional rule that most taggers have been using for ages.

The rule of thirds is pretty simple. In the most basic of explanations, it means placing the focus of the art piece on one side, as opposed to the center. What you want to do is divide the canvas up into thirds. Then, place the thing you want people to focus on right on top of one of the axis. PLEASE NOTE, this is just one very simple way rot compose a tag. It is great for beginners, but it is NOT the end all of composition. If you ever want to improve, eventually you'll need to try multiple compositions, and maybe even break this "rule".

Check it out.

"The theory is that if you place points of interest in the intersections or along the lines that your photo becomes more balanced and will enable a viewer of the image to interact with it more naturally. Studies have shown that when viewing images that people’s eyes usually go to one of the intersection points most naturally rather than the center of the shot – using the rule of thirds works with this natural way of viewing an image rather than working against it."

Principles of Design

This is easily one of the MOST IMPORTANT aspects of composition. It's what keeps the tag looking fresh and interesting.

So what are these principles? Well, in a way they are a check list of things to add to your piece in order to make it look good.

Here is a basic list of the principles:

Read this list, study it, practice it, live it, breath it, sleep on it, eat it, idk just use it dammit.

Wonderful, but how do you use these in art?

Great, I'm glad I asked!

WATCH THIS VIDEO. IT IS VERY VERY VERY VERY HELPFUL.

If you do nothing else, just watch this video. Seriously, it will help your tags.

Other types of composition:

Ciricular:

The goal of this composition is to trap the viewer with a circle of interesting elements, creating a repeating cycle for the eye.
